Exercise May Help to Prevent Falling

The act of falling is a threat to many seniors. It can cause harm to the feet and may hinder their lifestyles. Broken toes, ankles, and feet are common injuries that can occur as a result of falling. It can be helpful to practice a gentle exercise routine, which may help to maintain physical strength. Additionally, family members of elderly people can take measures to ensure their living environment is safe. This can include removing frayed rugs from common areas, improving lighting in darker hallways, and installing grab bars in the toilet and shower rooms. It may also be beneficial to have physical exams performed regularly and to monitor existing medications. What is Cuboid Syndrome?

Cuboid syndrome is a condition caused by an injury to the joint and ligaments surrounding the cuboid bone, one of the seven tarsal bones of the foot. Injuries are typically the result of overuse or of spraining the ankle. Cuboid syndrome also appears to be more common in people with pronated, or inward-turned, feet. Symptoms of Cuboid syndrome include pain, swelling, bruising, skin redness and a decreased range of motion in the affected foot. Treatment typically begins at home with resting the foot, applying ice, and compressing and elevating the foot. If pain persists or worsens, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist, who can rule out other conditions, such as a fracture, and perform various treatments to relieve pain and restore function to the foot. 

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

What Can Cause a Stress Fracture?

A stress fracture is a common sports injury, often brought upon by overuse and repetitive activities. Stress fractures can occur when small cracks form in the bone. Flat feet is a condition known for causing fallen arches, meaning the feet lay completely flat on the floor. There are two different kinds of flat feet one may experience, rigid and flexible. A flexible flat foot has an arch when resting, however, when standing or walking, the arch then disappears. This type of flat foot is often common among pediatric aged patients. A rigid flat foot develops during adulthood due to the weakening of the tibialis posterior muscle tendon. This type of flat foot may worsen over time and can cause pain and swelling in the feet, particularly the inside arch of the foot and ankle. Rigid flat foot may eventually lead to arthritis as well. What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.
